Anna Shen
Q: Tell us about yourself.
Anna is an entrepreneur and journalist, and has also worked in the UN, at the World Bank, and for several start-up companies, developing international strategies. She also writes for several publications such as the Huffington Post.
Q: What languages do you speak or understand?
I studied Chinese and Spanish.
Q: Which cities have you lived or worked in?
I have lived in Rome, Hong Kong, London, Washington, D.C., Dubai, and San Francisco and studied In New York, Los Angeles, Paris (summer school!) and New Hampshire, and probably a few other places I can’t remember!
Q: Do you have any noteworthy special skills or hidden talents not listed on a typical resume?
I love people, and I love to bring diverse groups together. I am very good at creating relationships between disparate parties. My mother says that I could show up in any country and know someone who will host me instantly. I think that was a compliment (: lol! I have tested this theory out all over the world; most of the time it has been seamless. I’m very blessed. Last night two T-birds that were here visiting from Arizona picked me up at the airport – in San Francisco! On vacation in Hawaii, I looked up the T-bird chapter leader, who answered in 10 minutes on a Friday, even though his wife was eight months pregnant, and he had just gotten home from a two-week business trip! The day I left, he took me to dinner and dropped me off at the airport. I think I have definitely sucked the marrow out of the T-bird network!
Q: Recommend a book, a movie, or local restaurant. Why?
A book: just released last week! Its called Fractals, New and Selected Poems (1980-2015) by Sudeep Sen, a fellow classmate from journalism school. He is a Bengali poet who writes in English – the BBC calls his work “widely recognized as a major new generation voice in world literature and one of the finest younger English-language poets in the international literary scene.” Highly recommended!!
Q: Where do you want to travel for pleasure?
Anywhere and everywhere…I think my body just prefers to be in motion much of the time! But at the moment, I am a sun and beach lover! Great food counts a lot too. Sydney, Sri Lanka, Cape Town, Provence, Rome. I love countries in evolution, and due to my prior work in international organizations, I traveled a lot to developing countries that were in transition.
